Program Manager at Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA)

"Sensors and Systems at IARPA"

Abstract:

Discussion of a number of programs and seedling efforts at IARPA that are developing novel sensors, sensor systems, and sensor components.  Includes the concept of program development at IARPA, a technical “deep dive” into the SILMARILS and MAEGLIN chemical detection programs, and an overview of several other seedlings focusing on laser system, fiber optic, and RF technology development. Special emphasis on the materials development efforts that enable new capabilities for sensors and sensor systems.

Biography:

Dr. Kristy DeWitt is a Program Manager at IARPA, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, where she develops and runs programs in the areas of trace gas and surface chemical detection as well as novel laser and sensor technology.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from the University of Mary Washington, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Virginia.  She did her postdoctoral work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where she designed and built an ultrafast UV/visible pump-infrared probe transient spectrometer to make time-resolved measurements of chemical reactions in gas and solution phase.  In her professional career she has contributed to the development of prototype military and commercial fiber-based LIDAR systems for 3D wind measurement, as well as systems for day/night human and man-made object detection.  She has also provided subject matter expertise as a support contractor at IARPA and at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in areas including chemical detection, sensor development (focusing on CBRNE), lasers, optics, nonlinear optics, fiber optics, materials science, spectroscopy, seismics/acoustics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and space systems.
