Scientific Research At The Walters Art Museum: Present, Past and Future

Conservation Scientist Glenn Gates will discuss current research in the field of cultural heritage that is conducted at the Walters Art Museum in collaboration with other institutions. A brief history of the development of this field will be reviewed, with particular attention to the recently established program of federal funding entitled Chemistry and Materials Research in Cultural Heritage Science at the National Science Foundation. Gates will also describe analyses conducted on the Archimedes Palimpsest at the Walters Art Museum and the significance of the results. Finally, Gates will describe specific examples of current cultural heritage research at the Walters Art Museum, how research questions are formulated, and how scientific research is conducted at the Walters Art Museum.

About the Speaker
Glenn Gates has been the Conservation Scientist in the Division of Conservation and Technical Research at the Walters since 2010. He is currently emphasizing research that includes applications of nanotechnology to cultural heritage preservation. Previously, Glenn was the Head Research Scientist at the Detroit Institute of Arts, where he applied organic materials analysis to the study of African Art. He completed his post-doctoral studies at the Straus Center for Conservation at Harvard Art Museums in 2005, after obtaining a PhD in polymer physics at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL and a MS in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.
