Christian Long, a graduate student working with Professor Ichiro Takeuchi, was awarded one of two 2006 Bruker AXS Excellence in X-ray Diffraction scholarships at the 2006 Materials Research Society (MRS) Fall Meeting.

The award was established last year, and Long and the Takeuchi group have won it two years in a row. This year, the winning paper was titled "Rapid Structural Mapping of the Ternary Metallic Alloy Systems Using the Combinatorial Approach and Cluster Analysis." It will appear in the Review of Scientific Instruments in 2007.

The work is in combinatorial materials science, a field in which a large number of different materials can rapidly be synthesized and screened. The technique improves researchers' ability to discover new materials, and makes the process faster and more efficient.

Bruker AXS manufactures x-ray systems for materials research and analysis. A panel of independent judges from industry, academia, and research facilities chose the recipients of the company's scholarships.
