Combined B.S./M.S. Program in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers a combined B.S./M.S. program for students currently enrolled at the University of Maryland.  Students enrolled in the B.S./M.S. program will earn both a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Science with thesis in five years.

Students must apply to the University of Maryland Graduate School during their senior year. They will begin their graduate program during the semester or summer following graduation.

The minimum requirements for acceptance into this combined program are:

  • At least a 3.50 GPA
  • No more than 24 credits of ENMA courses remaining for the B.S. degree
  • No more than 6 credits of CORE requirements remaining for the B.S. degree
  • Two letters of recommendation including one from the likely thesis advisor
  • A statement of research interests

Students interested in pursuing this degree option should discuss the possibility with their advisor by early in their junior year.  Ideally, the student should have identified a faculty advisor and have begun to work on a research project by their senior year.

Students will identify three graduate courses which will be taken generally during their senior year. These courses will count toward both the undergraduate and the graduate degree. During the following year, the student must complete the remaining requirements for the M.S. degree with thesis—the non-thesis option is not available as part of the five-year B.S./M.S. program.

Current University of Maryland students who are majoring in another engineering field may also take advantage of this program.  If they meet the requirements above, they may receive the B.S. in their field and the M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering.
